An integral part of the Department of Educational Leadership’s mission is to engage in teaching, research, and service that contribute to improving the quality of education and educational leadership in the Commonwealth, the nation, and the world. EDL faculty host or are affiliated with several state, national and international centers that contribute to identifying significant education and policy issues. These efforts contribute to framing individual, collaborative and interdisciplinary research as well as crafting locally constructed, highly relevant professional development programs and consultative services.
As a flagship, land grant university, the University of Kentucky is committed to its dual roles of research and service. The Department of Educational Leadership is uniquely situated at the intersection of these responsibilities as they relate to improving schools throughout the state and nation as well as internationally. Linking research findings to improving practice is accomplished by nationally prominent faculty through a broad range of activities including designing, developing, and delivering high-quality professional development products and services to educational organizations, schools and districts. In addition, EDL organizes professional development to be delivered through EILA credit approved workshops, “labs”, intensive multi-day summer leadership institutes, academies, and conferences that meet educators need to earn continuing education units.
The following facilities are faculty-affiliated centers, and they are housed in or related to the activities of the Department of Educational Leadership. We also maintain a page for upcoming conferences, events, and other opportunities for professional development. Finally, keep an eye on our departmental calendar.
CASTLE (School Technology Leadership)
CASTLE is the nation’s only center dedicated to the technology needs of school administrators. In addition to our highly/acclaimed School Technology Leadership graduate program, we also help other university educational leadership programs prepare technology-savvy school leaders and provide numerous resources for P-12 administrators and the faculty that prepare them.
Directed by Dr. John Nash, the Laboratory on Design Thinking in Education (dLab) is a P20 Innovation Lab. The dLab produces research on the role of design thinking in education, provides professional development for educators interested in applying design as a lens for program development, and delivers undergraduate and graduate courses in design thinking.
